I’ve always wanted to live in Florida. I’ve never been there before, but I’ve seen pictures and hear a lot about it. So I wanted to find the perfect university for me in Florida and what caught my eyes the most is the university of Central Florida.

After receiving information from your UCF website and getting details about UCF from my friend who wanted to join UCF, I strongly believe that UCF is my ultimate choice. The atmosphere, environment and appearance are just enough to make you feel relaxed and look forward for tomorrow and UCF has it all. It has a lot of social gatherings to give us the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

Even though it’s the 3rd largest university in America, they still find a way to make the classes small to give each one of us the chance to interact with the teacher. To me, that is the most important thing.

Finally I look forward to having a great improvement in my social skills and academic development when I join university of Central Florida, I will join and actively participate in clubs and societies that will build my skills and talents. It will be an honor and privilege to belong to the UCF community.

First, I would advise against using contractions (‘I’ve’, for example) in a college admissions essay. Even though it probably would not hurt your chances of admission, it is too informal for this sort of assignment. Besides that, I think you should include something about what you want to study–that is, unless you have already written about this at length elsewhere.

Admissions Criteria

Admission to UCF requires the applicant to earn a standard diploma from a regionally accredited high school (or its equivalent) with specific high school academic units, a competitive cumulative high school GPA in those academic areas, and satisfactory SAT or ACT test scores.

To apply you must submit the following:

  1. Online application
  2. Non-refundable $30 application fee
  3. Official high school or homeschooled* transcript
  4. Official scores for the SAT (code: 5233) or ACT (code: 0735)
  5. Official college transcript (an initial transcript for application review, as well as a final copy once all college course work is complete and degree is posted), if applicable
  6. Official GED* or TOEFL/IELTS score, if applicable

  1. The Redesigned SAT (rSAT) was launched by the College Board in March 2016. UCF will accept both the old SAT (test administered prior to February 2016) and the Redesigned SAT (test administered March 2016 and beyond) for the 2016-17 admission cycle. While UCF will continue to superscore the SAT, we will not superscore the two versions together. We will superscore the old SAT with other administrations of the old SAT and we will superscore the Redesigned SAT with other administrations of the Redesigned SAT only.   2. Submission of the application essay is strongly encouraged.

Course Units

Specific high school course units are required for admission as a first-year student (an academic unit is a non-remedial, year-long course):

  • 4 units of English (at least three with substantial writing requirements)
  • 4 units of mathematics (Algebra I and above)
  • 3 units of natural science (at least two with laboratory)
  • 3 units of social studies
  • 2 sequential units of the same world language
  • 2 elective units, preferably from English, mathematics, natural science, social studies, or world language areas
  1. Satisfying minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to UCF.
  2. Florida BOG Regulation 6.001 (7) authorizes universities to refuse admission to applicants due to past misconduct.

What are UCF’s admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

Admissions Rate: 49%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at UCF is 49%. For every 100 applicants, 49 are admitted.

This means the school is moderately selective. The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they’re more flexible than other schools. If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in. But if you don’t, you might be one of the unlucky minority that gets a rejection letter.

UCF GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.92

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.92, UCF requires you to be at the top of your class. You’ll need nearly straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to show that college-level academics is a breeze.

If you’re currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.92, you’ll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate. This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Most schools require the SAT or ACT, and many also require SAT subject tests.

You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to UCF. More importantly, you need to do well to have a strong application.

UCF SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school’s average score.

Average SAT: 1320 (Old: 1853)

The average SAT score composite at UCF is a 1320 on the 1600 SAT scale.

On the old 2400 SAT, this corresponds to an average SAT score of 1853.

This score makes UCF Moderately Competitive for SAT test scores.

UCF SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile New SAT score is 1160, and the 75th percentile New SAT score is 1340. In other words, a 1160 on the New SAT places you below average, while a 1340 will move you up to above average.

The 25th percentile Old SAT score is 1600, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1880. In other words, a 1600 on the Old SAT places you below average, while a 1880 puts you well above average.

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

UCF has the Score Choice policy of “Highest Section.”

This is also known as “superscoring.” This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, UCF will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and UCF forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1320, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will surely give you the highest Superscore possible.

UCF ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, UCF likely doesn’t have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 28

The average ACT score at UCF is 28. This score makes UCF Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 28.

Even though UCF likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 24 or below, you’ll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 28 and above that a 24 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you’re taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school’s ACT requirement of 28 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you’re happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren’t able to find the school’s exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to UCF, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 28.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Both the SAT and ACT have a Writing section that includes an essay.

UCF requires you to take the SAT/ACT Writing section. They’ll use this as another factor in their admissions consideration.

SAT Subject Test Requirements

Schools vary in their SAT subject test requirements. Typically, selective schools tend to require them, while most schools in the country do not.

We did not find information that UCF requires SAT subject tests, and so most likely it does not. At least 6 months before applying, you should still doublecheck just to make sure, so you have enough time to take the test.

We did more detailed research into this school and found the following information.

There is a guaranteed admission program, but for Florida residents only. The requirements include being in the top 10% of your high school class, getting a minimum SAT score of 1010 (Math and Critical Reading) or 1500 (Math, Critical Reading, and Writing) or an ACT composite score of 21, submitting your application by December 31, and taking 4 core math classes.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission. Scoring a 1880 SAT or a 28 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. Because the school admits 49% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn’t matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn’t be too far off from the school average of 3.92. But you won’t need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.

But if your score is a 1600 SAT or a 24 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

This intensive academic program facilitates the articulation between graduates of UCF’s Burnett Honors College and the UCF College of Medicine. Students must meet all eligibility and performance requirements for both The Burnett Honors College and the Medical Scholars Program.

Yes. All freshmen must submit official SAT or ACT scores—they must be reported directly to the university electronically or via the mail. For international students, the TOEFL or the IELTS exam may also be required.

Your GPA is recalculated based on the academic core courses (including English, math, science, social studies and foreign language). UCF uses a 4.0 grading scale, and also awards additional quality points for any weighted courses within the academic core. Courses marked as Pre-AP, Pre-IB, Pre-AICE, and Honors are given an additional .5 quality point.

Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced International Certification of Education (AICE), and Dual Enrollment (DE) courses are given 1 additional quality point.

The Solutions Center also holds online chats throughout application season and allows you to contact them via web form. A search function also exists using keywords to direct you to the appropriate web-based resources.

We require a total of 18 high school units. You need to complete four years of English, four years of math (Algebra I or above), three years of science, three years of social studies, two years of the same foreign language (in sequence) and two academic electives.

Consideration will be given to the highest official reported score. UCF will superscore the SAT, however, we will only superscore results from the same version of the exam. We will not combine subscores from the Current SAT and the Redesigned SAT.

ACT scores are based on the highest reported composite score; UCF does not super-score the ACT exam.

Currently, only First Time in College (freshmen) students may apply to UCF using the Common App. Students wishing to transfer to UCF should complete the UCF institutional application for admission.

Additionally, First Time in College students may, if they choose, submit their application via the UCF institutional application for admission.

To attend a UCF Regional Campus, you have to meet admission requirements, including admission into UCF with an AA or AS degree or having 60+ credit hours.

No, but we do recommend that you submit the essay.

Although optional, the essay assists the Admissions Committee in knowing you as an individual, independent of test scores and other objective data. We ask that you respond to two of the topics below. Your responses should be no longer than a total of 500 words or 7,000 characters.

  1. If there has been some obstacle or bump in the road in your academic or personal life, please explain the circumstances.
  2. How has your family history, culture, or environment influenced who you are?
  3. Why did you choose to apply to UCF?
  4. What qualities or unique characteristics do you possess that will allow you to contribute to the UCF community?

Beginning in Spring 2017, UCF will not require the writing section of the ACT or the essay section of the SAT.

For all changes to your admission status, including deferrals and final decisions, you will receive an email sent to your current email address on file notifying you of the change. Your status will also be posted to myUCF.

Only offers of admission and admission options will be confirmed by receipt of a letter from the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

You can request to have the $30 application fee waived on the basis of financial hardship by submitting a written request AND one of the following items:

  • An SAT, ACT, or NACAC fee waiver form from your high school guidance office
  • Documentation from your high school showing your eligibility for a free or reduced lunch

You are a transient student if you are seeking a degree at another institution and would like to take courses at UCF on a temporary basis. Transient admission is for one semester only, after which courses completed at UCF are transferred back to your home institution.

Florida public community/state college and university students: You will need to complete the Transient Student Application through Florida Shines. Your application will be processed by the Registrar’s Office at UCF.

If you are attending any college or university other than a Florida public institution, you will need to complete an application for admission. Your application will be processed by Undergraduate Admissions at UCF. In addition to completing the online application, you will need to submit an official transcript from your last institution attended.

Please visit http://my.ucf.edu/ and log-in using your NID and NID password. If you do not have your NID, you can retrieve it by clicking on the link in the log-in area titled “What is my NID?”.

Once you answer the prompts, an email with your NID will be sent to the e-mail address you listed on your application. The e-mail will also include a default password and instructions explaining how to log in to myUCF for the first time. Once you have logged in for the first time you can change your password. For your protection, you will be prompted to change your password from time to time. You must change your password within the allotted time or your account will expire.

  1. Click on the “Student Self Service” link on the left side menu.
  2. Scroll down to the sixth option and click on “Undergraduate Admissions.”
  3. The third sub-topic is titled “Application Status.” This link will not only show your application status, but will also list required and received documents.

Students interested in dual enrollment (part time enrollment) or early admission (full time enrollment) prior to high school graduation will meet the following academic qualifications:

  • Be at least a high school Junior for dual enrollment or a Senior for early admission by the time of UCF enrollment
  • Have at least a 3.8 high school GPA based on our calculation of academic core classes
  • Score at least 1200 SAT (math + critical reading) or 26 ACT (composite)

If a student meets or exceeds these qualifications, then he/she can be considered for admission. The undergraduate application should be completed through our website. All required official academic transcripts and/or test scores should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. No fee is required for dual enrollment (part time enrollment) applicants.

The deadlines to apply for admission are:

UCF will consider applications from students who are educated through a homeschooled program. Homeschooled applicants should submit a homeschooled transcript that includes a list of all coursework (both completed and in progress), showing final grades and units earned for each course completed. A brief description of the methods used for evaluation should accompany the homeschooled transcript. If homeschooled applicants previously attended another school, or completed courses through the Florida Virtual School or dual enrollment at a local college or university, official transcripts are required, and those courses should also be reflected on the homeschooled transcript. SAT and/or ACT results must also be submitted.

Applicants who present a GED will also be considered for admission. Official GED results, a partial high school transcript, and ACT and/or SAT results must be submitted.

Your NID is your secure sign-on for many systems at UCF, including myUCF and online courses. To obtain your NID, go to myUCF, click “Sign On”, click “What is my NID”, then follow the instructions to obtain your NID and create a password.

Your UCF ID is the number you will use to identify yourself when you call or visit offices across campus, including Undergraduate Admissions. To obtain your UCF ID, go to myUCF, log in using your NID and password, click Student Self Service > Personal Information >UCF ID Info. The State of Florida requires that you demonstrate proficiency in a world language or American Sign Language equivalent to at least the second high school level (e.g., Spanish II) or the second elementary course at the college level (e.g., SPN 1211 – Beginning Spanish II).

Due to restrictive state regulations, UCF is not permitted to provide online courses or instruction to students in some states. Yes. The Florida Board of Governors requires all students who enter a Florida public university, including UCF, with less than 60 semester hours to complete at least 9 semester hours prior to graduation by attendance at one or more summer sessions. University presidents or their designees may waive the application of this regulation in cases of unusual hardship to the individual.

You can request a waiver of the $200 enrollment deposit by completing the Enrollment Deposit Form on myUCF and then sending a written request AND one of the following items:

• An SAT, ACT or NACAC fee waiver from your high school guidance office

• Documentation from your high school showing your eligibility for a free or reduced lunch

Honor Your Knighthood assists new UCF students in developing an understanding of the importance UCF places on subject matters related to Academic Integrity, Alcohol Awareness, and Sexual Assault Prevention.

Through the completion of three individual on-line modules, UCF students will begin to demonstrate tenets associated with the UCF Creed of Integrity, Scholarship, Community, Creativity, and Excellence. UCF is committed to student safety and success both inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, all incoming UCF students are required to complete these on-line modules prior to the first day of class.

Admitted students will see the Honor Your Knighthood modules as requirements on their myUCF “To-Do List”. It can take up to 3 weeks for the requirement to be removed after successful completion of the modules.

Admission to UCF is more competitive today than at any other time in our history. We typically receive approximately 30,000 freshman applications for an incoming class of 6,400. As a result, a number of students are offered space on our wait list.

The first thing to understand is that a wait list offer is not the same as being denied; you are still being considered for admission to UCF. Should space open up in our freshman class, the Admissions Committee will reevaluate your application and you may be removed from the wait list and offered admission.

Yes. You should file for financial aid and continue to apply for scholarships. Should you be admitted from the wait list, any awards and financial aid for which you have qualified will be applied to your student account.

It is possible that you will be notified of your decision after the May 1 deadline. This is not unusual for students on the wait list. If you are admitted, you will be given a new deposit deadline.

It is difficult to predict how many students may be offered admission from the wait list. The number of spaces, if any, that open in our freshman class determines the number of students admitted. You are encouraged to submit updated transcripts and/or SAT/ACT scores for the Admissions Committee to review.

The wait list at UCF is not ranked. All students accepting a wait list offer will be considered for admission to the university on a space available basis.

UCF will notify you of our decision as soon as possible, but no later than May 31 of each year. Offers of admission are confirmed by receipt of a letter from the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions. Final decisions — other than offers of admission — are not communicated by mail, but will be confirmed through a status update on myUCF.

Cost, Fees, and Financial Assistance

There are a number of waivers the university offers that may apply to you. Please check with the Office of Student Accounts for information on eligibility and requirements for these waivers.

Start by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to March 1 of your senior year in high school—you can apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Not sure if you qualify? This is not classification as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, but a waiver for which eligible students can apply. The student will still be classified as a non-resident for tuition purposes.

Florida high school graduates who do not meet requirements for Florida Residency for Tuition Purposes, but who do meet the following conditions, are eligible for a waiver of out-of-state tuition and fees as dictated by F.S. 1009.26(12)(a):

1. Attended a secondary school in this state for 3 consecutive years immediately before graduating from a high school in this state;

2. Apply for enrollment in an institution of higher education within 24 months after high school graduation; and

3. Submit an official Florida high school transcript as evidence of attendance and graduation.

The waiver is applicable for 110 percent of the required credit hours of the degree or certificate program for which the student is enrolled.

A student who is granted an out-of-state fee waiver under this subsection is not eligible for state financial aid, which includes Bright Futures.

Scholarships

No, accepting your scholarship does not obligate you to attend UCF. You have until May 1 to submit your enrollment deposit, which lets us know you will be attending. If you are unsure of your final decision at the time your scholarship is awarded, please choose the “Extend” option, which gives you until May 1 to accept your award.

No, there are not fixed criteria for UCF scholarships. A variety of factors, but especially high school academic performance, ACT or SAT results, application timing, leadership and extra-curricular involvement, play a role in awarding scholarship offers.

Undergraduate Admissions can only offer one scholarship to any one student. Typically, we will offer you the highest award for which you qualify.

No, you must begin your enrollment at UCF no later than the fall semester for which the scholarship was awarded.

Your scholarship does not apply to the first summer semester at UCF. However, students may request future summer semester scholarship disbursements from the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Yes, UCF must receive the completed results of the FAFSA from scholarship recipients. Although our awards are strictly merit based, UCF must account for all funds we release to students and the FAFSA is used for that purpose. You do not risk losing an admissions scholarship if you do not demonstrate financial need. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance for more information regarding the FAFSA and financial aid.

Yes, you must still submit the non-refundable enrollment deposit even if you are offered or accept your scholarship.

You may accept your scholarship through myUCF. Instructions on accepting your award will be included with your official award letter.

Your scholarship may be combined with other non-Undergraduate Admissions awards including Florida Bright Futures, Florida Pre-Paid, private scholarships and need-based assistance. Scholarship funds will first be applied towards the balance of your tuition and fees. If any funds remain after your student account is paid, they will be applied to any outstanding university debts. Once your student account is cleared, any remaining funds will be disbursed directly to you within the first two weeks of the beginning of each fall and spring semester. Excess funds may be received by mail or electronic funds transfer. You may make arrangements for direct deposit through Student Accounts.

There is no separate application for UCF scholarships. All freshman applicants offered admission are considered for these awards so long as funds are available.
