Freshman Applicant Requirements

You want to be part of a talented, diverse and interesting class at Maryland, right? Creating just that kind of class is the goal of the Admission Committee.

High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants. For best consideration for admission to the university, merit-based scholarships and invitations to special programs, students should apply by the priority deadline. Freshman applicants who apply for admission to the fall semester are also automatically considered for admission to the spring semester.

Application Requirements

As prescribed by the Board of Regents, the university expects you, at a minimum, to have completed the following course work by high school graduation:

  • Four years of english
  • Four years of math, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students who complete Algebra II prior to their final year must complete the four-year mathematics requirement by taking a course or courses that utilize non-trivial algebra. Examples of courses meeting this requirement include Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus and successor courses, Statistics, and College Algebra.
  • Three years of history or social science
  • Three years of science in at least two different areas, with at least two lab experiences
  • Two years of foreign language

The most competitive applicants exceed these minimum requirements, earning a strong A-/B+ or better average in their high school coursework while taking several honors and/or Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses and additional academic electives. Be sure to review our application checklist for a list of all required materials for a complete application.

Application Review Process

The Admissions Committee considers 26 unique factors as part of our holistic review. This process considers all aspects of each applicant’s qualifications and offers admission to the most competitive applicants in order to build a vibrant class of first-year students. When a decision is available, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will send an email to the applicant notifying them that their admission decision can be viewed online. Information on financial aid and merit scholarships will be released at a later date.

Applications are considered complete when the online application and all required documents have been submitted. All materials must be postmarked by the appropriate deadline for consideration. Please note that it may take up to five days after submission for you to be able to view the status of your application and any submitted documents online. It is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm receipt of all application materials.

Choosing a Major

When you apply to Maryland, your preferred major is not considered in whether or not you are admissible to Maryland. You cannot indicate double-major preferences or minors at the time of application; after you are admitted, you can work with the academic advisor in your college to declare these preferences.

Certain majors are very popular and require a limit on the number of students they can accommodate. These majors are known as Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP). Admitted students who selected a Limited Enrollment Program as their major are then reviewed by the specific program to determine admission to that major. While the majority of students are admitted to their preferred major, some LEP applicants may not be. Students who are admitted to Maryland but not their preferred LEP major are placed in Letters & Sciences, where they will work with an advisor to meet the gateway requirements to earn admission to that major. Admitted students who did not select an LEP major are admitted directly to the major indicated on their application. All major decisions are included in the applicant’s admission decision letter.

Please answer one of the following essay questions in your application. Make sure to include the question itself at the start of your essay. Your essay should be no more than 550 words; the question will not be included in the essay total word count.

  1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
  2. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.

Getting to know Coalition Platform

Q: Why has the University of Maryland (UMD) chosen to be a part of the Coalition?

UMD, with more than 90 other public and private institutions, has joined the Coalition because we are supportive of its mission to increase college access and affordability for all students. Also, the innovative platform is designed to assist all students by providing free resources and collaborative tools that will help them prepare for the college search and planning process. To learn more about the Coalition, watch this brief video.

Q: Does the University of Maryland (UMD) use a single application portal?

Yes. As in years past, UMD will only offer one application. UMD uses the application offered through The Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success. We do not offer or accept paper applications.

Q: What are the main components that make up the Coalition platform?

There are three main components of the Coalition platform: the Locker, the Collaboration Space and the Application Portal. While students are encouraged to use the Locker and Collaboration Space to prepare for the admission process and get feedback from teachers and mentors, UMD does not require their use. UMD admissions staff will not review nor have access to the items in an individual student’s Locker.

Q: When can my students begin to use the Coalition platform?

Students can begin using the Coalition platform at any point in their high school career. Once students create their account, they can access the Locker and Collaboration Space to organize items for their college application. Get started by creating your profile today.

Applying with Coalition Platform

Q: How can my student apply to the University of Maryland (UMD)?

UMD uses the application provided by The Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success. This application should be used by students seeking freshman or transfer admission, or students seeking admission to the University of Maryland, College Park at Shady Grove. Get started by creating your profile today.

Q: How do my students share their Coalition profile information with the University of Maryland?

To access the Locker, Collaboration Space and Application Portal, your students must first open an account on The Coalition Platform and complete their Profile. Your students can search for schools they are considering and then choose to share their information with their interested schools. For UMD, this will then add the student to our mailing list to receive future communications.

Q: Will the University of Maryland (UMD) be reviewing or giving feedback to documents in my students’ Lockers?

No. The Locker is a private space for students to invite their high school counselors, teachers and mentors to review documents prior to submitting these items as part of their application. UMD admissions staff do not have access to a student’s Locker, and will not review application materials prior to their submission.

Q: Will my students be at a competitive disadvantage for admission if they do not backfill their Locker with materials?

No. The Locker is designed to offer a private space for students to organize and get feedback on materials from high school counselors, teachers and mentors throughout their high school journey. Maintaining a record of these items will help prepare students to complete their college application, but students are not required to have anything stored in their Locker to apply to the University of Maryland.

Q: How do I submit application documents like letters of recommendation and transcripts through The Coalition?

The Coalition has free, built-in tools which allow the applicant to request that letters of recommendation and transcripts be sent directly from teachers and counselors. These items will appear in the student’s Locker as received and the student can include them when submitting their application, but they cannot view or edit these items.

The University of Maryland will still accept application materials submitted through Naviance, Parchment and mail. For a list of acceptable submission methods, review our Submitting Documents page. Items submitted outside of the Coalition can take up to two weeks to process and reflect in the Application Tracker.

Q: What essay questions does the University of Maryland (UMD) use on the application?

UMD will use the essay questions provided by the Coalition.

Q: What materials does my student need to submit to complete the University of Maryland’s application?

Depending on whether the student is applying for freshman or transfer admission, and whether they are an international applicant, different materials are required. Following up on the announcement of the UMD Smith MBA Essay Prompt and Deadlines, we wanted to share our essay topic analysis for the 2017-2018 admissions season.

2017-2018 UMD Smith MBA Essay Topic Analysis

Why Smith? Why an MBA? Why now? Be sure to include your short-term and long-term career goals. (Please limit your response to 300 words.)

This prompt is a standard career goals essay that touches on one’s career plans, timing of one’s education and interest in the Smith MBA. While on one hand, it could work to directly address each prompt in order, establishing your goals first would lend meaning to your interest in an MBA and Smith from the outset. Think of it like having a map with the end destination already established—the reader will know where you are heading from the start and, therefore, have a foundation to understand the richer reasoning behind the path. You may therefore begin with a brief mention of long-term plans, as these would lend meaning to your proposed short-term goals. Then, identify the function or job title you plan to pursue after business school, as well as your target industry and perhaps one or two target organizations. This position should be a logical first step toward a longer-term role that you hope to hold 10 or so years after your MBA.

It would also make sense to include a few sentences about how your work experience has prepared you for these future roles, as well as the skills and knowledge that you still need to gain in order to move successfully along this path. With this “why MBA” piece established, candidates will then want to offer a brief assertion about the timing of pursuing an MBA—perhaps you have made as much progress in your current role as you can, or perhaps an MBA is the only way for you to gain the necessary skillsyou’re your future goals. Detailed treatment of the ways specific elements of the Smith MBA program would help you to bridge the gap between your current skill set and their future plans. We recommend that candidates aim to devote at least 100 words to this section of the essay, if not a full half of their response.

To get as much mileage as possible out of this essay, you should aim to develop a very detailed response that explains how lessons from key classes and participation in certain student organizations will position you to accomplish your professional objectives. The adcom will also be interested in hearing about how you see yourself contributing to the community and enhancing the experience of other students, so naming some events that you would like to help organize or a club you would hope to lead will also bolster your case. Covering all of this ground within a 300-word essay is no easy task, so zeroing in on the aspects of the Smith MBA program that are most closely aligned with your goals will be important to developing an effective response; an in-depth review of the program website, conversations with current students and alumni, or visits to campus, are all viable sources of the information you’ll need here.

Please use this essay to discuss anything additional about your candidacy that you have not yet shared in your application.

While there is no set word limit for this essay, it would be wise to keep this under 300 words, given the length of the required essay. Optional materials also create more work for the reader, so it’s important to keep that in consideration while being concise in one’s explanations.

Because there are no additional fields in the online application for liabilities such as gaps in work experience or a low GPA, it would be wise to use this space to briefly cover any potential weak points in one’s candidacy. Such discussions should be direct and to the point, providing an explanation and pointing to mitigating factors without being defensive or making excuses. Mitigating one’s weakness or weaknesses here should be prioritized; however, given the open-ended nature of the question, there is also potential to discuss a particularly meaningful activity or project that could not be covered in the application materials. Determining a topic will depend on the information already covered elsewhere, so this may be worth revisiting after you have a sense of what you are able to share in the application process. Because this is an optional essay, a selected anecdote or additional information should enhance your candidacy and highlight a strong skill or special interest to stand out, as opposed to just be an extension of the short required essay.
