Freshman Applicant Requirements

High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants. For best consideration for admission to the university, merit-based scholarships and invitations to special programs, students should apply by the Priority Deadline. Freshman applicants who apply for admission to the fall semester are also automatically considered for admission to the spring semester.

As prescribed by the Board of Regents, the university expects you, at a minimum, to have completed the following course work by high school graduation:

  • Four years of English
  • Four years of math, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students who complete Algebra II prior to their final year must complete the four-year mathematics requirement by taking a course or courses that utilize non-trivial algebra. Examples of courses meeting this requirement include Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus and successor courses, Statistics, and College Algebra.
  • Three years of history or social science
  • Three years of science in at least two different areas, with at least two lab experiences
  • Two years of foreign language

The most competitive applicants exceed these minimum requirements, earning a strong A-/B+ or better average in their high school coursework while taking several honors and/or Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses and additional academic electives. Application Review Process

The Admissions Committee considers 26 unique factors as part of our holistic review. This process considers all aspects of each applicant’s qualifications and offers admission to the most competitive applicants in order to build a vibrant class of first-year students. When a decision is available, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will send an email to the applicant notifying them that their admission decision can be viewed online. Information on financial aid and merit scholarships will be released at a later date.

Applications are considered complete when the online application and all required documents have been submitted. All materials must be postmarked by the appropriate deadline for consideration. Please note that it may take up to five days after submission for you to be able to view the status of your application and any submitted documents online. It is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm receipt of all application materials.

Choosing a Major

When you apply to Maryland, your preferred major is not considered in whether or not you are admissible to Maryland. You cannot indicate double-major preferences or minors at the time of application; after you are admitted, you can work with the academic advisor in your college to declare these preferences.

Certain majors are very popular and require a limit on the number of students they can accommodate. These majors are known as Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP). Admitted students who selected a Limited Enrollment Program as their major are then reviewed by the specific program to determine admission to that major. While the majority of students are admitted to their preferred major, some LEP applicants may not be. Students who are admitted to Maryland but not their preferred LEP major are placed in Letters & Sciences, where they will work with an advisor to meet the gateway requirements to earn admission to that major. Admitted students who did not select an LEP major are admitted directly to the major indicated on their application. All major decisions are included in the applicant’s admission decision letter.

In the application, students will be asked to answer one of five essay prompts, which can be reviewed in advance here. The essay provides you with the opportunity to showcase aspects of your personality and experiences that fit well with the University of Maryland community. When considering your approach to the following essay questions, think deeply about your answer, making it creative and succinct. Use this opportunity as a time for self-reflection and intellectual meditation.

For the Fall 2017 freshmen class, we received nearly 33,000 applications for a class of 4,075. For students admitted for the Fall 2017 semester, the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1330 to 1440, and 30-33 on the ACT. Admitted freshmen also earned an average weighted GPA of 4.30.

Students who have completed international coursework, or who hold or intend to seek an F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor visa to study in the United States, should apply as international applicants. Review the requirements for international applicants for additional information.

Transfer Application Checklist

High school graduates who have completed, or are in the process of completing, at least 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours at a regionally accredited college or university should apply as transfer applicants. AP/IB credits or placement tests cannot be used towards the overall 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours.

International Application Checklist

Students with non-U.S. academic records and/or are non U.S. citizens or non permanent U.S. residents (those who hole or intend to seek an F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor visa to study in the United States) should apply as international applicants.

Shady Grove Application Checklist

School of Music Applicants

If you’re interested in the School of Music, you will need to submit the online application supplement. After submitting the supplement and other required application materials, the School of Music admissions office will schedule your audition with faculty members. The application supplement and audition will be used to determine your eligibility for admission into the School of Music. It will not be used, however, in the review of your eligibility for admission to the University of Maryland.

If you play the flute, piano or trumpet, or are interested in voice, you must also fulfill pre-screening requirements by November 1.

Required Application Documents

2. Nonrefundable application fee of $75

When completing your University of Maryland Coalition application, you will be required to pay the fee on our secure website with a credit card at the time of application unless you have received a fee waiver. Fee waivers must be submitted prior to application completion for consideration. We cannot accept cash or check payments.

3. Two letters of recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required for a completed application: one from your school counselor and one from a teacher. Recommendations must be sent to us directly from the recommender.

4. Official copy of your high school transcripts

Your institution must submit an official copy of your high school transcripts listing all courses you have completed from all schools attended.

5. Official copy of your college transcripts (if necessary)

If you have completed any collegiate coursework, your institution should submit an official copy of your college transcripts listing all courses you have completed.

If you have non-U.S. academic records for post-secondary work, please review our international applicant requirements as they might apply to you.

6. Official standardized test scores

The SAT or the ACT is required. Official scores should be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the test administrator. We use the highest subscores from the SAT and ACT in our review of your application. We will accept scores from the old SAT and redesigned SAT (first administered in March 2016); we do not require the essay portion of the SAT. View College Board’s Concordance Tools to see how scores from the redesigned SAT compare to those on the old SAT.

SAT Subject Tests are not required; applicants who do not take Subject Tests are not disadvantaged in the admissions process. We do not require the writing portion of the ACT.

If you would like to receive credit toward your degree for successfully completing Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), A/AS level examinations, or certain other standard exams, those official scores must also be submitted once the student has been admitted.

7. Activities and awards list or resume

Detail your efforts in the community, arts, leadership, athletics, family involvements, work experience, and other extracurricular activities and hobbies in order of interest to you.

8. School of Music application (School of Music applicants only)

In addition to the above items, students seeking enrollment into the School of Music must submit the online application supplement and complete an audition. The application supplement and audition will be used to determine your eligibility for admission into the School of Music. It will not be used, however, in the review of your eligibility for admission to the University of Maryland.

Getting to know Coalition Platform

Q: Why has the University of Maryland (UMD) chosen to be a part of the Coalition?

UMD, with more than 90 other public and private institutions, has joined the Coalition because we are supportive of its mission to increase college access and affordability for all students. Also, the innovative platform is designed to assist all students by providing free resources and collaborative tools that will help them prepare for the college search and planning process. Q: Does the University of Maryland (UMD) use a single application portal?

Yes. As in years past, UMD will only offer one application. UMD uses the application offered through The Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success. We do not offer or accept paper applications.

Q: What are the main components that make up the Coalition platform?

There are three main components of the Coalition platform: the Locker, the Collaboration Space and the Application Portal. While students are encouraged to use the Locker and Collaboration Space to prepare for the admission process and get feedback from teachers and mentors, UMD does not require their use. UMD admissions staff will not review nor have access to the items in an individual student’s Locker.

Q: When can my students begin to use the Coalition platform?

Q: How do my students share their Coalition profile information with the University of Maryland?

To access the Locker, Collaboration Space and Application Portal, your students must first open an account on The Coalition Platform and complete their Profile. Your students can search for schools they are considering and then choose to share their information with their interested schools. For UMD, this will then add the student to our mailing list to receive future communications.

Q: Will the University of Maryland (UMD) be reviewing or giving feedback to documents in my students’ Lockers?

No. The Locker is a private space for students to invite their high school counselors, teachers and mentors to review documents prior to submitting these items as part of their application. UMD admissions staff do not have access to a student’s Locker, and will not review application materials prior to their submission.

Q: Will my students be at a competitive disadvantage for admission if they do not backfill their Locker with materials?

No. The Locker is designed to offer a private space for students to organize and get feedback on materials from high school counselors, teachers and mentors throughout their high school journey. Maintaining a record of these items will help prepare students to complete their college application, but students are not required to have anything stored in their Locker to apply to the University of Maryland.

Q: How do I submit application documents like letters of recommendation and transcripts through The Coalition?

The Coalition has free, built-in tools which allow the applicant to request that letters of recommendation and transcripts be sent directly from teachers and counselors. These items will appear in the student’s Locker as received and the student can include them when submitting their application, but they cannot view or edit these items.

The University of Maryland will still accept application materials submitted through Naviance, Parchment and mail. For a list of acceptable submission methods, review our Submitting Documents page. Items submitted outside of the Coalition can take up to two weeks to process and reflect in the Application Tracker.

June 11, 2004, 4:37 a.m. The sun slowly stretches its arms over the horizon getting ready for its daily routine and I am still awake from the darkness of night packing, unpacking, and repacking my bags. The weather was rainy for several days, but it had yet to weather my spirits and discourage my heart that was set on this missions trip. “What would the weather be over like over there?” I continually pondered on. As the break of day crept nearer and nearer, my anticipation, and eagerness peaked. My behavior was considered odd to some; I went from a usual countdown of days to creating checklist and pacing my bags several weeks before the trip, “just to make sure everything would fit. ” My parents called me paranoid. I just wanted to be prepared; after all, I was going to live in Sells, Arizona for weeks without my family- and I packed accordingly -hoping for the best, yet preparing for the worst.

Who knew getting from point A to Point B would have so many other points in between? The first step was to let go of the starting point. My family looked at me as though they would never see me again. The worry they expressed was earnest, yet something inside me felt compelled to push away all my insecurities as we exchanged final farewells. After the missions team’s 5 hour plane ride across America to Sells, we were at our final destination. Surprisingly, after the strenuous workout of dragging around heavy luggage with a combination of being sleep-deprived, one look at the few enthusiastic church members was all it took to transfer their contagious energy into my own body.

Thousands of miles away from home, I felt as though I just been abducted by aliens and my surroundings were remote and exotic. The foreign sights, exhausting heat and barren land all ticked my senses. Upon arriving at the distination, I observed carefree children playing around under decrepit shelters. Within a few minutes adjustment to the unconventional heat and rough land, I befriended the natives I will live with for the next 2 weeks. Each one of them possessed a unique characteristic, yet, like my friends at home, they all had the same quality in their smile, which never failed to persuade me to return that same genuine smile. However despite their ecstatic surface, deep inside each one of them is a harrowing whimper for help. Many are struggling to escape poverty, gangs, homelessness, drugs and hardships beyond my imagination. Soon I realizing that all our opportunities and possessions are nothing to take for granted, I eventually became more determined then ever to help give back to others.

The unforgiving sun that awoke me every morning succeeded to disturb my slumber the next morning and haul me out from under my sleeping bag like an uncontrollable magnet. An uncertain anxiety rocked my foundation as I further noticed the vastly different and challenging undertaking to come. But then, my friend Steve greeted me with utmost jubilation and optimism as we set out to tackle another day trying our best to help the children. As we engaged in the natives through conversation, activities and laughs, I couldn’t help but stare in admiration for the other missionaries diligence and dynamics. After a couple days of the routine breakfast, bible study and crafts, praise and worship, I became gradually more confident in my abilities to help others. I got in the habit of waking up early and every morning became a race between the sun and me to wake before the other. One morning, upon my victory against the sun, I set out to help my pastor set up the days food and services. In return, I received a gratitude and sense of assurance expressed through my pastor and the other missionaries analogous to the comfort of home and family.

However, being on this missionary team with the abused, unfortunate and homeless revealed our purpose was nothing to take lightly. This leadership position was crucial because of the duties that I fulfill for the mission and children. But, I also realized such position holds a greater importance because I am able to be a motivator and influence others in a undertaking to make a difference in old child, an elderly, disabled, and countless others who seek help. By volunteering for this mission, I could give and help a community, and in return a sense of belonging and serving. Then and now, every time I volunteer, my prayer is that I had made even one person’s day brighter. Helping the less fortunate was a humbling experience though which I have come to appreciate life and people from many diverse backgrounds.

Pushing aside my pride and worries, I committed to every helping pursuit because the smiles and the witness of improvement I get and give in return are priceless and timeless. The thank-yous that I get and the progress I see in the children made every minute of time worthwhile. No longer was I concerned about the torching sunlight, and lack of luxury found at home and difficulties. I devoted every motion and thought into the service and help to the children at hand. It is my continuing hope that children of all ages, locations and nationalities will have the experience in their lives to make a lasting impact on both themselves and those they help.

What I thought would be a simple trip of recalling the pre rendered discusses, advice and activities to the needing children extended to one of much more significance, a lesson in life. The new people I met and various profound experiences left my mind perplexed, yet it gave me motivation to view life in a new perspective and live at a new level. I did not need to travel far to apprehend this epiphany because it did not take long to realize how precious every single opportunity and help are

. The missionary team I embarked in and the children of Arizona help me realize that everything I have and own should not be taken for granted. By the end of the trip, I learned that I really was immature for thinking I was mature and well of enough to live without the despotic rules of teachers and parents. I never understood the hardships of living a life of the slightest resemblance of some of the kids I had the pleasure and benefit to help and live with. I reached a new level of acceptance and had a much greater appreciation for everyone and everything I had. The end of this journey was the beginning of a much greater one, and just as I prepared myself before enlist in this mission, I was ready to apply what I obtained from this experience to the endurance of my life.

Upon returning home, I was able to meet my parents endearing selves one more with a better understanding of the importance of family. I went to school with a greater appreciation for the teachers and their service in education. Upon realizing the importance of everything I have, I was determined to further give back to others indiscriminately. Through my continue involvement of community service, ranging from serving food and music to homeless shelters to help elders play bingo at senior centers, to tutoring elementary kids, I have realized the full truth of Martin Luther Jr.’s proclamation: ” everybody can be great. because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make you subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” It is my goal to bring this statement to life for as many people as possible and to make a marked difference.

By attending University of Maryland, I firmly believe I can further complement my endeavor. Realizing the importance of picturing every opportunity as precious gift, I am confident that I will be able to my pursuit of knowledge to its highest level. I am excited to be immersed in intellectual inquiry that I seek from a college setting and will make myself be known as a disciplined person who tackles challenges and is not satisfied until the best has been achieved. I want to approach the college experience as a time during which I can make a positive contribution to the student body that appreciates the intellectual freedom and thought and captures every leverage opportunity for improvement and help on sight. Through exchange of ideas and collaboration of efforts, I wish to build a promising and fulfilling future where I can not only fulfill my dreams of impacting the lives of people I love, know and live among this world. To me, college is the best opportunity that can be given to a person; I will seize college to make it the pinnacle of my accomplishments.
