USC / Marshall Essay Topic Analysis 2016-2017

With the announcement of USC / Marshall 2016-2017 essay topics, we wanted to offer our Essay Topic Analysis for the Class of 2019 MBA hopefuls. Let’s take a closer look at each prompt:

Essay 1: What is your specific, immediate short-term career goal upon completion of your MBA? Please include an intended position, function, and industry in your response. (100 words)

This is a straightforward request for career plans following graduation from the Marshall MBA program. Candidates should lead with their short-term goal, given the explicit language of the prompt. In other words, where do you expect to be the day after graduation, professionally? One hundred words does not allow for much elaboration outside of one’s short-term plans; however, given the lack of a typical career goals essay in the set, you may try to dedicate a sentence or two to why an MBA is necessary and what your long-term goal is. Concisely defining your long-term goal would lend meaning to the short term, and identifying the skills you hope to gain from an MBA would show how you anticipate being prepared for the short term.

Essay 2: At Marshall, we take pride in the fact that our students work collaboratively, both inside and outside the classroom, to create a culture, a community, and an environment that truly defines what we call the Trojan Family. Please describe the contributions you expect to make to your classmates during your time at USC. How will they benefit from your presence in the program? (500 words)

Of course, the majority of this response should center on your planned activities and contribution as an MBA student. Given the adcom’s preamble about collaboration inside and outside of the classroom, applicants will be expected to be fairly concrete in their comments about how they’ll engage in specific activities, to the point of discussing their behavior outside of the classroom and identifying specific student organizations in which they might take a leadership role.

Applicants should also describe the impact they hope to make during their two years on campus—after all, Marshall asks specifically about the benefit of your presence to fellow students. Candidates should note that speaking convincingly about their ability to make a positive difference will likely require some informed sense of the areas of opportunity and need on campus. Conversations with students and alumni will be very important in producing the most effective essay possible.

Optional Essay: Please provide any additional information that will enhance our understanding of your candidacy for the program. (250 words)
