USF Requirements for Admission

Choose Your Test

What are USF’s admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

In this guide we’ll cover what you need to get into USF and build a strong application.

School location: Tampa, FL

This school is also known as: University of South Florida

Admissions Rate: 45%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at USF is 45%. For every 100 applicants, 45 are admitted.

This means the school is moderately selective. The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they’re more flexible than other schools. If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in. But if you don’t, you might be one of the unlucky minority that gets a rejection letter.

USF GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.94

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.94, USF requires you to be at the top of your class. You’ll need nearly straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to show that college-level academics is a breeze.

If you’re currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.94, you’ll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate. This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Most schools require the SAT or ACT, and many also require SAT subject tests.

You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to USF. More importantly, you need to do well to have a strong application.

USF SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school’s average score.

Average SAT: 1230 (Old: 1725)

The average SAT score composite at USF is a 1230 on the 1600 SAT scale.

On the old 2400 SAT, this corresponds to an average SAT score of 1725.

This score makes USF Competitive for SAT test scores.

USF SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile New SAT score is 1140, and the 75th percentile New SAT score is 1330. In other words, a 1140 on the New SAT places you below average, while a 1330 will move you up to above average.

Here’s the breakdown of new SAT scores by section:

USF SAT Score Analysis (Old 2400 SAT)

The 25th percentile Old SAT score is 1580, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1870. In other words, a 1580 on the Old SAT places you below average, while a 1870 puts you well above average.

Here’s the breakdown of old SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

USF has the Score Choice policy of “Highest Section.”

This is also known as “superscoring.” This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit.

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, USF will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and USF forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1230, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will surely give you the highest Superscore possible.

Download our free guide on the top 5 strategies you must be using to improve your score. This guide was written by Harvard graduates and SAT perfect scorers. If you apply the strategies in this guide, you’ll study smarter and make huge score improvements.

USF ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, USF likely doesn’t have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 26

The average ACT score at USF is 26. This score makes USF Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 28.

Even though USF likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 24 or below, you’ll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 26 and above that a 24 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you’re taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school’s ACT requirement of 26 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you’re happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, in our research, we found that USF does in fact offer an ACT superscore policy. To quote their Admissions Office:

At USF, we consider your highest section scores across all SAT and ACT test dates that you submit, including the SAT Writing and ACT English/Writing. Final admission decisions will be made using only your highest scores.

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that USF receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit.

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

Note: If you have previously accessed OASIS, log in using your self-declared six-digit PIN. Navigate to the Student and Financial Aid section, select Admissions, then check your undergraduate application status.

5. Login to the Admission Status site using your USF ID or SSN and OASIS PIN.

Below are answers to common questions for the corresponding admissions application sections. When you’re ready, you may complete your admissions application.

Why is my Social Security information required?

Your Social Security number is required for application submission. This information is used to ensure that all of your application data is applied and tracked accurately. This information is also used in scholarships and financial aid awards, and is required by federal law for financial aid reporting, financial aid transactions and federal work study.

If I have completed dual enrollment work from another college, am I applying as a freshman or transfer student?

If you will have completed sixty or more transferable hours upon entering USFSP, you will be applying as an upper-level transfer student; fewer than sixty transferable hours, a lower-level transfer student.

How many USF System campuses can I apply to for a semester?

You may only apply to one campus of the USF System at a time, even if you’re applying for separate terms. If you have already submitted an application to another System institution and would like to update your application to USFSP, please submit an Application Update Form.

How do I find my school code?

If your high school (only required for those students entering USFSP with fewer than sixty transferable credit hours) does not appear when searched by name, the fastest solution is to visit the College Board’s code search. In the drop-down “Search by” menu, select High Schools. Enter the city and state of your school to retrieve the six-digit school code. Enter the code into the High School Information search on your Admissions Application.

If your post-secondary institution does not appear when searched by name, the fastest solution is to visit the following site: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.aspx.

How do I complete the college-level coursework section?

Please be aware that any college-level coursework completed at your high school qualifies as dual enrollment. You must indicate the institutions from which all credit is being or has been earned. Including this information ensures the timely processing of your application.

Complete the current course list portion of the application to the best of your ability. If the course code or number is not known, fill it in with zeros. The most important information to provide is course title and duration.

Can I complete my application if I don’t know my ACT or SAT scores?

This portion is only required for those students entering USFSP with fewer than sixty transferable credit hours.

If you are not sure of your exact scores, fill in your best estimate. No action will be taken on your application until your official test results are received. Additionally, if you have not yet tested (or retested), we still strongly encourage you to proceed with application submission. This way, your file will be ready for review once your test scores are received.

Whose information do I provide for the residency questions?

When completing the residency portion of the application, remember that if you are younger than the age of 24 the Federal Department of Education considers you to be a dependent, meaning that you are claimed on somebody else’s taxes. Therefore, the person who will help you complete the residency portion will be the person who claims you on taxes, like a parent or legal guardian.

Additionally, don’t forget that all residency documents you provide must be issued at least 12 consecutive months before the term for which you are applying. For example, if you’re applying to Fall 2014, all residency documents you submit must be dated or issued prior to August 24, 2013.

How do I check my application status?

Within 48 hours after you submit your application, you can check your admission status 24/7 by visiting OASIS, USFSP’s Online Access Student Information System.

The first time that you visit OASIS, you will retrieve your University ID number (or U Number) and NetID. After selecting the Login button, perform the following steps:

  • Under “Don’t have a USF NetID?” select “Create an account now”
  • After entering your name, select the USF ID# radio button
  • Next to the field “Enter USF ID #” will be a link for you to look up your USF ID number.
  • Once you have retrieved your USF ID, complete the Activation by USF ID# form.
  • After selecting Activate NetID return to the Sign-On page
  • In OASIS, select Student > Admissions > View My Undergraduate Application Status

If you have additional questions about your USFSP application, please call us at (727) 873-4142. We look forward to receiving your application!

My Motivation for a Nursing Career

Why am I so passionate about a nursing career you might ask? Well, for four reasons: (1) It fits my personality, (2) I’ll find it fulfilling to know I’m contributing to society, and someone’s well being, (3) I have a large interest in health related topics, and (4) nursing will provide me with a long stable career in the community I wish to live. Just below, I describe in detail on the four reasons on why I would like to become a nurse:

1. My Personality: I’m a person who is very caring, friendly, open-minded, and will make the needs of others a priority. My calm and patient demeanor would be an asset in a health care setting, and I would be committed to helping my patients and their families in an empathetic and non-judgmental manner. Thus, I would find it fulfilling caring for others and know I will be able to preform well under stress. Also, no fear of blood or needles here!

2. Contributing to Society: Overall, I would feel I’m contributing to a big need in society. I’ll be proud to say I’m a nurse, and find it satisfying in providing life-saving care and comfort. For example, while on a plane, a flight attendant asked if there was a nurse or doctor on board to assist a passenger. At that moment, I wished I were able to help in a time of need.

3. Large Interest in Health Topics: Within the last six to seven years, I began taking a large interest in my own health and in health related topics. I eat well, work-out and read articles on health topics regularly. In addition, I like to watch Discovery Health and Fitness, and enjoyed learning about the topics in my pre-requisite courses. I believe this interest will keep me focused in my studies and as a registered nurse.

4. Long Stable Career: I would have a lifelong noble career (not just a job) fulfilling my community’s need for nurses with opportunities for growth. Not only will I be a nurse until retirement, but perhaps even after retirement as well. It’s a skill I will have for the rest of my life, and I will find it fulfilling to nurse others back to health.

How I Plan to Succeed

Now that I established why I would like to pursue nursing, I’ll explain how I plan to succeed in the second degree accelerated program. First, considering I live in Sarasota, I’ll make arrangements to stay close to USF, thus giving me more time to attend to my studies. Secondly, I will practice the same study habits, which led me to achieve a 4.0 since the fall of 2011. I attribute this success to my dedication of time spend studying, taking good notes, organizing my notes, reading all required chapters, accomplishing all assignments listed in the class syllabus, and closely listening to exam reviews. I plan to spend Monday to Thursday nights as well as weekends attending to my studies. Overall, I’m very motivated to achieve my BSN at USF, and know I will not allow myself to fail. My aspiration on becoming a well-educated registered nurse is great, and I will challenge myself to receive all “As.” My studies will be my number one priority by far.

How My Previous Career and Volunteer Experience Will Contribute to Nursing

Along with doing well in my studies, my communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills will too be beneficial. While attending to my duties as a volunteer in the ER at Doctor’s Hospital, I have the opportunity to speak with and observe the nurses in the ER. From my observations, I believe the above skills obtained from my previous marketing career will become beneficial to my new nursing role. For example, in marketing, I was able to build beneficial relationships with customers and colleagues. This led me to develop my interpersonal communication skills, which will allow me to communicate well with patients, families, and doctors in a clear and easy to understand manner. This is something I practice now while speaking with families and patients in the ER (even using my Spanish). And, I do see how persuasive communication is often necessary for the benefit of the patient, and for being a patient advocate.

These stated characteristics will contribute both to my success as a student and as a RN. I truly desire to become an exceptional RN in the area, and I know by attending USF, it would put me one step closer to my ultimate career goal. I admire all the hospitals USF is affiliated with, and hope to work in one soon. I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Go Bulls!
