If you look at it today it is kind of similar because say a teacher gets injured and a professional athlete the value would be based on who

Essay on Capital Punishment Cheapens the Value of Human Life

I have the infallibility of human judgment demonstrated to me”. Why? The following quote by Stewart J sums it up perfectly in that: [T]he penalty of death differs from all other form of criminal punishment, not in degree but in kind. It treats all persons convicted … not as uniquely individual human beings, but as members of a faceless, undifferentiated mass … subjected to the blind infliction of the penalty of death. Human Cloning and the Value of Human Life To recognize the value of human life, from conception until its natural end, is an achievement of civilization to be safeguarded as a primary good of the person and of society. That is, it happens that the respect…

The Value of Life Essay

The Value of Life

It is only when a drastic event occurs that we begin to rethink how we live our lives. When people truly believe that their life will come to an end, they cherish every moment and aspect that they experience.

This essay examines three perspectives on the value of life. I will draw from “My Journey Back to Life”, an autobiography by award winning cyclist Lance Armstrong, “What is a Life Worth?,” a news report by Amanda Ripley, and “Unfinished Business,” an essay by psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

Lance Armstrong’s autobiography, “My Journey Back to Life” is about living life to the fullest and taking things for granted. Lance Armstrong was an athletic cyclist who spent his life racing on his bike. He has been fighting an ongoing war with big trucks that has hit him many times. Lance Armstrong always figured if he died an untimely death, it would be because some rancher in his Dodge 4×4 ran him headfirst into a ditch. “One minute you’re pedaling along a highway, and the next minute, boom, you’re face-down in the dirt. A blast of hot air hits you, you taste the acrid, oily exhaust in the roof of your mouth, and all you can do is wave a fist at the disappearing taillights.” (Armstrong, 7). That’s how cancer feels like to Lance Armstrong, like being run off the road by a truck. Lance Armstrong used to take things for granted because he could endure more physical stress than most people and he doesn’t get tired while doing it. “My illness was humbling and sparkly revealing, and it forced me to survey my life with an unforgiving eye.” (Armstrong, 15). Cancer was the best thing that happened to Lance Armstrong.

Amanda Ripley’s news report,”What is a Life Worth?” is about putting a price tag on lives. Joseph Hewins was a poor workman who was barreled over by a train. Hewins left behind his wife and three children, who were poor even before his death. When his widow sued, she lost at every level. At that time, when a man died, he took his legal claims with him, now the courts started to put a dollar value on a life- after death. “The concept of assigning a price tag to life has always made people intensely squeamish.

After all, isn’t it degrading to presume that money can make a family whole again? And what of the disparities? Is a poor man’s life worth less

than a rich man’s?” (Ripley, 2). During September 11, many people died in an incident. The government is trying to pay victims and their families without placing blame. They sent Kenneth Feinberg to persuade the victims and their families to join the federal Victim Compensation Fund. He told them that the government has agreed to write large checks to victims’ families without any litigation. There were different sums for different families and deductions. The deductions have the same effect of equalizing the differences in the awards, which critics have called Feinberg’s “Robin Hood Strategy.” “Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do . . . It will make or break a company, a church, a home.” (Ripley, 30). This means that manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing is more important than all those things.

The third perspective, “Unfinished Business,” an essay by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross is about a psychiatrist’s experiences and point of view on children that know that they are dying. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross is an expert on issues related to death and dying. She talks about her experiences with dying children, who she says have taught her about life. “I learn always from dying patients. Instead of always looking at the negative, what you see is the uniqueness and strength in every single human being.” (Kubler-Ross, 262). She talks about a 12 year-old girl who was dying at home. Kubler-Ross helped her and her little brother discover how much they loved each other. “Grief is the most God-given gift to get in touch with your losses.” (Kubler-Ross, 262). Elizabeth Kubler-Ross stresses how much we can learn about life by dealing with death.

In conclusion, life shouldn’t be wasted. You should live out your life to the fullest. Don’t waste it sitting around all the time. Life has no monetary values, it can’t be calculated. Life is valued by love and family relationships that can not be repeated once the person dies. Life is a journey toward death. Some of the most profound stories about this journey come from people who are close to death and from those people who are close to the dying. Life should be treasured and valued without a price.

Meaning of Life

What is the meaning of life is one of the oldest questionS. People make meaning in their lives in a variety of ways, such as family, friends, memories, and experiences. Family and Friends are what make my life most valuable because with them I make memories that will last a lifetime and also because they are always by my side when tough times come. SOLID THESIS.

START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE. In The play “Hamlet’s soliloquy” by William Shakespeare, the main character Hamlet states that life has no value NEW SENTENCE he backs it up by saying that life is a “sea of troubles” and “whips and scorns of time” . The only reason he is still alive is because he fears death. I disagree with Hamlet because the storm will pass and the spring will come.we just have to look at the bright side of all the struggles. Also, I usually try to break up the routine and stay positive by doing sports, which is a good stress reliever.

Another Example, “Roger Ebert: The Essential Man” By Chris Jones tries to tell us that we should enjoy what we do because life is shorter than we think. He explains his battle with cancer, his life as a movie critic, and how he would prepare himself to make it through the day watching four movies in a day. I agree with ebert and i believe he was a really brave man because although he knew he had cancer, he continued doing what he loved. In my personal example, I love soccer. I’ve been playing soccer since 3 and its something i enjoy doing because I like to follow my dads steps and be a great soccer player.

Another great example is“What is the value of A Human Life?” by Kenneth Feinberg. She States that each individual is worth a different price, And she backs up her statement by saying that a stock broker is worth more than a soldier or police man. I disagree because i believe that life has so much value that money can’t buy. Also I believe that the government should provide equal aide for everyone.don’t have any personal examples, but I would not like it if I didn’t get equal aide .I dont care about the money because it isn’t going to bring my family member back alive, but I would sure like equal aide.

Finally, Steve Jobs Addressing Stanford University graduates States that life is tough but one should do what one loves .he lists some examples like ‘keeping on looking don’t settle” and “ stay hungry and foolish. I believe Steve jobs is one brave man.he faced death once with a very rare and incurable cancer but he didn’t settle; he kept on fighting. one personal example is that when I have bad days I try to stay positive or just listen to music it just gets stuff off my mind.

In Conclusion, I believe that one has to enjoy family and friends in order to create good memories and add value to life. Also, do extracurricular activities in order to break up the old, boring routine. Finally, I believe one has to always stay positive and never lose the end of the day everything will settle back to normal.

Values are something that is important in life. Values can’t be exchanged in any way or form. Everyone has something that they value and of course that includes me as well. A value is something that a specific person or groups respects and affectively regards it as something important in their life. An example would be my values, I, personally, have many values. Some of my most important values consist of my family, my ethnicity and my memories.

Value of Life Essay

Life. This 4-letter word seems to be quite simple at first. However, if you look deeper you will see that it is a very complicated thing with a lot of various components that are like threads intertwined into a tight tangle. Every tangle has its own story with key points and of course aspects that influence it most of all – its values. As for me, there are three main values in our life: time, success and love. They are connected, and they affect the flow of our life.

First of all in order to determine our values we have to ask ourselves: what is life? In terms of biology, it is a period of existence of a living being from the dawn – the moment of birth till the decline – its death. For everyone this period is unique. For someone it is quite long, for others it is too short. Very often we can hear people saying that they are so busy that they do not have enough time to live, meaning that they do not feel the taste of life. They think that a couple of additional hours per day or days per week would make them happier as they would have more time to spend with their families, friends, lovers, pets. However, in most cases when you have free time you decide that you can do even more things – take a new task, get one more job, accept another challenge. People are used to waste their time.

Quite often, or I would say almost always, we appreciate things only when we lose them. For sure, some people would say that this fact cannot be transferred to such notion as life as we live only once. However, think how many times you thought: why did not I do that before – when I was young/had free time/had more money/was healthier/was single, etc. We regret about things that we did not manage to do and very often we forget about the main value of our lives. We forget to live!

Michel de Montaigne has said: “The value of life lies not in the length of days, but in the use we make of them.” So it does not matter if you are young or old. What is actually of importance is the way you have spent your life. You can be a 60-year old grumbler claiming all the time that the world is cruel and life is not fair to you. Or you can be a 30-year old enthusiast who travelled all over the world, helped thousands of homeless and saved hundreds of people with one brilliant idea. According to Myles Munroe, “The value of life is not in its duration, but in its donation. You are not important because of how long you live, you are important because of how effective you live.”

Some people say that the main sense of life for them is to earn a lot of money in order to buy a big house and a cool car, to start their own business and make a career. For them this means “to take everything best from the life.” However, history shows us so many cases when a person has achieved all his targets on the way to become successful but still lacked something. They did not feel the taste of life as they were not happy. It does not mean that you should not strive for more. For sure, we are living while we are evolving but sometimes all you have to do is to find a person who can share your misfortune with you. “All you need is love,” as it was sang by The Beatles.

However, it is so sad to say but at the same time by falling in love people may forget about the value of their lives. Young people, impulsive and immoderate, are inclined to rash and ill-considered actions, like suicides because of unrequited love. These modern Romeos and Juliets do not understand that losing their lives will cause only harm to the people they loved. The sense of life is to give love, not to take it away. If one person does not need it – give it to someone else. Maybe you will add value to another unfortunate life.

So these three values – time, success and love – can make your life on one hand full and unforgettable but on the other hand hard and painful. There are always a couple of options. It is you who has to decide what way to choose. You are the lord of your life and the value of it depends on your own actions.

Education essay: The Value of Education

Published under category: Writing Ideas | 2015-06-12 08:43:22 UTC

Context: Education

Education is one of the basic activities in every society. Most people view education as a formal process of acquiring knowledge that takes place in a class environment. Education is a process that starts right at birth. It is not a process that is limited to teaching people basic academics like mathematics, history, computer or geography. It is a much wider term. Education can be considered as a process of discovering new things that a person was not previously aware of and increasing knowledge. Education carries people to greatness. It is an essential thing in life because it empowers people with knowledge, enables them to contribute to the society, earn money, and be independent.

Vitruvian Man: An icon of pedagogical instruction

The term “education” originated from Latin word “educate” which means to “bring up.” The use of the term “education” should, therefore, not be limited to the process of imparting knowledge to pupils in some specific subjects. It is a wholesome process of developing a child by training them in habits and attitudes that nurture them to success and ability to face the future life with confidence. According to Plato, education is a process that is meant to develop all the beauty and perfection that a child is capable of, both in the body and soul. In short, Plato implied that it is a process of developing both a sound mind and a sound body. Education aims at developing all the faculties of man, especially the mind, so as to appreciate the contemplation of supreme goodness, truth, and beauty, which contribute to perfect happiness.

Education is very important because it is an avenue that facilitates the process of cultural transmission. All societies credit their existence to culture. Education allows the culture of a society to be transmitted to young people, hence, the continuation of society. Every new generation has to be educated in the ways of the group so as to promote the existence of the traditions. Education fulfills the needs of each society, as every society has its specific ways of doing things. A good example is the African communities, as much of their culture has not been influenced by the modern education. The communities have an initiation stage at adolescence that is meant to graduate people to adulthood. During this period, the initiates are taught all the ways and secrets of the community. The initiates are then considered to be full members of that particular society in which they have been initiated.

Education is a process that promotes socialization. A large part of a person’s social skills are acquired through the process of education. Socialization is an important aspect of human life, hence, has to be promoted positively to be beneficial to the society. Most governments have invested in education because they realize the importance of socialization. Education forms a continuous process in which definite ways of perception, acting, and feeling are imposed into a child for them to fit it into the society. The process of education allows young people to develop socialization skills that they cannot acquire spontaneously. It facilitates the transmission of the norms of a group so that persons can conduct themselves in approved ways. They are able to know things that are wrong and right.

Education allows people to fit in different stages of life. Social learning is a continuous process that starts at birth and ends at death. No human being can achieve total perfection in it. There is no point in time that individuals can consider themselves to have acquired everything about a society or group, and that there remains nothing to be studied. Human beings belong to different groups at different stages of their lives. While in these groups, they have to learn new rules and patterns to govern their behavior. People do not play the same roles throughout their lives. Education helps them fit in the different roles that they are faced with in life. Human life begins with childhood; they get into adolescence then adulthood, marry, sire children, get into middle life, retire, and then eventually become old and die. The different roles come with different patterns of behavior, which have to be learnt. This implies that throughout the life of a human being, people are involved in the education process. It helps in developing skills that are important for different stages of life.

Education is important because it helps individuals to acquire knowledge. Acquisition of knowledge is also a continuous process. Knowledge comprises a large sphere of concepts that are boundless and limitless. No one can master all the concepts or exhaust them. The world is a miraculous entity that is comprised of a lot of things. The more one tries to know about something, the more it becomes mysterious. Human entities, therefore, strive to acquire as much knowledge as possible about the universe; although, this is a limited process that is hampered with complexities. Education facilitates the continuous endeavor to acquire knowledge.

Education creates employment. The field of education has created many job opportunities in the world. Governments budget huge sums of money to be used in the education sector in doing research and employing teachers. The research process has opened different opportunities that previously did not exist. The industries and inventions that are in the world are the outcomes of education. The industries provide a lot of employment opportunities to people. The education sector has also employed millions of people to work as teachers, lecturers, and researchers among others. Education provides a source of income to those who are employed in the education sector and the students who are being taught. Education empowers young people with knowledge that is essential for various fields. After one’s completion of the college, they are able to get jobs in different institutions, hence, earn a living.

Education forms the basis of a good life. Human beings get to understand themselves through the process of education. One gets to understand themselves fully as a human being through the process of education. The training of the human mind helps them to see things differently compared to other creatures. One is, therefore, transformed from primarily being an animal to being a human. The process of education empowers human beings to be superior to other beings, and make the most out of their environment to live a good life. Living a good life does not only imply having the material needs, but also understanding the significance of life. A man who lives a good life understands what they live for and the things that they need to struggle to get. Education allows man to live an integrated life, that is, a life with significance.

Education enables people to live a peaceful life. People understand the importance of everything that is in the universe, hence, relate to them in a peaceful way. Education has enabled people to understand that all human beings are similar regardless of the color, cultural, and geographical differences. Previously, people have been involved in superiority battles, with some races feeling superior and others feeling inferior. The process of education, however, empowers human beings to understand that a color is merely a surface difference, hence, need not be used to discriminate people. Besides, human beings are able to co-exist peacefully with other animals and the environment. Man has learnt the significance of preserving the environment, therefore, ensuring that they live a peaceful and healthy life.

Education is valuable because it gives man freedom. An educated man knows the things they should do and things they should not. They do not have to rely on other people’s instructions for them to engage in various activities. The knowledge gained from the education process empowers a person to act with authority without the need to continuously consult other people. One is given the intellectual freedom to engage in different activities as they wish.

Education is, therefore, a very important tool that is essential for every person. Education helps people to develop positive social relations, fit in different stages of life, acquire knowledge, and live a good and peaceful life. Education also empowers people with skills that enable them to gain employment, hence, be empowered economically. It is, therefore, important that everyone invests in education.
