Violent Video Games

Video games always provide a great pass time activity for children. These games are so many and so addictive that when a child is not controlled, he can spend all his time playing the games. The game a child plays can be a good or a bad thing in his life. For example, children who learn how to play chess at a tender age usually show signs of high levels of intellect. However, the same case does not apply for violent video games.

The effects of violent video games are as varied as the number of the games. One effect that is common with all of them is their addiction. This can be a terrible thing because a child might not do any productive activity whenever at home. This means that he does not study when at home or even do his assignments. Consequently, his performance at school definitely deteriorates. Moreover, the child could sacrifice development of his talent such as attending a music class just for the purpose of playing a violent game.

Another effect that has caused ripples among parents and the society in general is the possible violent behaviour in kids who play such games. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between such games and violent behaviour in children. Controlled experiments place little emphasis on this relationship. The obtained results show that the negative effects of such games are quite minimal.

There is also an observation regarding these games and their players where children who are naturally aggressive prefer playing this type of games to others. This observation waters down the chances of violent games leading to violent behaviour in children. When interviewed, some kids who play this type of games say that they are not negatively affected by the games. This is definitely backed up by their non violent behaviour.

It has also been observed that violence displayed on television such as in action movies or news has more chances of leading to violence in children that the violent games. However, it is important to note that when a child plays a violent game he is likely to experience some physiological effects. These effects include an increase of both heart rate and brain activity.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that violent games barely lead to violent behaviour in children. However, they are not beneficial to the children because of their addictive nature, which can deter a child’s growth.

Stop Blaming Video Games! – My Personal Argumentative Essay

Stop Blaming Video Games!

The video games phenomenon is somewhat new in this modern society. Although they often to be entertaining, the contents have become more violent and disturbing as computing technology has become much more advanced. These days, the popularity of violent video games has caused an increase in controversy. Parents and experts feel that some games are just too violent and they demand the government to regulate the sales of these games. However, I strongly believe violent video games do not cause an increase in aggression in adolescents and the forceful plan by the government is caused by an exaggeration of the effects of violent video games and this plan are indeed pointless.

Besides the violent contents, video games have several positive aspects. Based on my experience, video games can push children’s competence to the limit by forcing them to master certain ability to overcome the obstacles in the level. For example, “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six” series have become one of the games that require a solid teamwork. The player acts as the leader of an elite anti-terrorist squad consist of 3-4 members. At the beginning of the game, players can choose how to infiltrate the terrorist compound, either by planting an explosive on the door, using a fast rope from the rooftop or simply breaching into several doors to create a surprise assault. These options will ignite the sense of logical thinking and strategy formations in which formal education does not offer.

Aside from the cognitive aspects, video games are also the tool of social interactions. Friendships can sometimes be developed through playing video games and ultimately keeping them away from drug usage and violent activities. Most of the video games today have either multiplayer or online capabilities or even both. For example, I made friends with several Japanese and lots of Americans from playing “Call of Duty 4” online. The game focuses on eliminating the other team hence teamwork has a major role in succeeding the game. With a headset (a combination of a headphone and a microphone), my team members and I discuss and plan a strategy effectively and sometimes talk about our backgrounds. Personally, meeting lots of people online develop my English ability (since English is not my first language) and social skills because for some people, starting a conversation with a stranger can be really tough. In general, video game is an astonishing tool to keep children entertained during leisure time.

On the other hand, some people, although they already know some of the positive aspects of video games, still believe that the negative will overcome the positive ones. The article “Don’t Shoot: Why Video Games Really Are Linked to Violence” by Amanda Schaffer from Slate.com stated ” The connection between violent games and real violence is also fairly intuitive. In playing the games, kids are likely to become desensitized to gory images, which could make them less disturbing and perhaps easier to deal with in real life. When video games aren’t about violence, their capacity to teach can be a good thing. For patients suffering from arachnophobia, fear of flying, or post-traumatic stress disorder, therapists are beginning to use virtual realities as a desensitization tool. “(Schaffer) Though this presents an evidence that violent games do in fact increase violent thoughts , this data still cannot serve as an evidence because the test is conducted in a controlled environment, without considering other aspects that might result in the change in behavior. Additionally , al though violent video games might expose children to violent behavior, the amount of violence are not as great as the ones in movies and television. The news is filled with stories of war and murder, and nearly every movie contains some form s of violence. Plus, these two media are different from games in a very important way because they involve real people, not computer-generated characters. As mentioned by Dr. Kipling D. Williams Ph. D, one of the social psychological science faculties in Purdue University, children’s violent tendencies can be diverted towards violent video games rather than actually doing it in the real life. (Williams)

Prof. Williams also pointed out that, besides playing violent games, genetics and environmental aspects and self-control must be considered as some of the factors that contribute to the increase in aggressiveness. Genetics tend to play a huge role in personality of a person. Some person might have a tendency to be more rebellious and aggressive. Moreover, easier access to firearms in several countries can lead to violent thoughts and behaviors. “Guns can act as a stimulus because it reminds the person of aggressive behaviors seen on television or maybe in real life. If the person does not have a solid self-control, it can lead him to a violent behavior.” (Williams) Self-control is one of the main aspects because no matter how many violent stimuli in the environment are, self-control can suppress one’s violent and aggressive thoughts.

Prof. Williams strongly believes that there is no single cause that can lead to an increase in aggressive behavior in children, consistent with Dr. Craig A. Anderson, Ph. D statement during an interview with MSNBC, “Video game violence is only one risk factor for aggressive behavior in the real world. There are also dozen or so known risk factors. It is not the smallest risk factor, but it is an important one.” (Anderson)

Finally, I believe that regulations will not prevent children from playing the games they want to. They will still get their hands on those games, w hether from a parent, sibling, or older friend. Making violent video game s illegal might increase children’s curiosity and make the child want to play it more so that he or she can see form himself what all the controversy is about. I think that the responsibility lies within the parent, not the government.

In playing the games, kids are likely to become desensitized to gory images, which could make them less disturbing and perhaps easier to deal with in real life. When video games aren’t about violence, their capacity to teach can be a good thing. For patients suffering from arachnophobia, fear of flying, or post-traumatic stress disorder, therapists are beginning to use virtual realities as a desensitization tool.”(Schaffer) Though this presents evidence that violent games do in fact increase violent thoughts, this data still cannot serve as evidence because the test was conducted in a controlled environment, without considering the other factors that might result in a change in behavior. Additionally, although violent video games might expose children to violent behavior, the amount of violence is often not as great as seen in popular movies and television. The news is filled with stories of war and murder, and nearly every movie contains some form of violence. Plus, these two media’s are different from video games in a very important way because they involve real people and not computer-generated characters. As mentioned by Dr. Kipling D. Williams Ph. D, one of the social psychological science faculties in Purdue University, children’s violent tendencies can be diverted towards violent video games rather than actually doing it in the real life. (Williams)

Prof. Williams also pointed out that, besides playing violent games, genetics and environmental aspects along with self-control must be considered as some of the factors that contribute to an increase in aggressiveness. Genetics play a huge role in a person’s personality. Some people have a tendency to be more rebellious and aggressive. More importantly, easier access to firearms in several countries can lead to violent thoughts and behaviors. “Guns can act as a stimulus because it reminds the person of aggressive behaviors seen on television or maybe in real life. If the person does not have a solid self-control, it can lead him to a violent behavior.” (Williams) Self-control is one of the most important factors because no matter how many violent stimuli exist in a person’s environment, self-control can suppress one’s violent and aggressive thought and behaviors.

Prof. Williams strongly believes that there is no single cause that can lead to an increase in aggressive behavior in children, consistent with Dr. Craig A. Anderson, Ph. D who made this statement during an interview with MSNBC, “Video game violence is only one risk factor for aggressive behavior in the real world. There are also dozen or so known risk factors. It is not the smallest risk factor, but it is an important one.” (Anderson)

Finally, I believe that regulations will not prevent children from playing the games they want to. They will still get their hands on those games that they desire, whether from a parent, sibling, or older friend. Making violent video games illegal or restricting the sale of violent video games result in an increase children’s curiosity about such games and make the child want to play it more so that he or she can see form himself what all the controversy is about. I think that the responsibility lies within the parent and not the government.

Thing that struck me the most: why are you using a lot of personal pronouns and experiences? A professional essay, at the very least, gives the illusion of being objective, though your essay seems entirely subjective. It will make your reviewer think twice about your integrity in the paper. I see. Thank you for your advice.

Your introduction paragraph before the essay states that you essay is ‘about how violent video games do not increase aggression in adolescents’. However, you seem to prove two points. Firstly, that they do in fact increase aggression and that video games have positive aspects. These two points are, of course, true to some extent but if you are trying to show the opposite then your essay does a poor job. I don’t want to outright criticise you and you are right in saying that video games may not be the main culprit but it’s just that the essay doesn’t really do what you say it will which technically means it is a bad essay.

Generally, when people write essays they are coloured by their personal view and when it comes to gamers and the violence issue then we tend to get fired up. Take a step back and really think about what you’re trying to say and how you can construct your argument. Also, the last few paragraphs could use a bit more substance.

Epic win, right here. I’m sick of people plastering a stereotype on people who play and enjoy violent video games. The stereotype being “Well, if he plays violent games, he’ll turn into a psychopathic killer and murder/rape everyone.” Nice essay.

Other then a few grammatical error’s the essay itself is vary well structured. this is the sort of attention the gaming community need’s if we are going to curve the stereotypes and controversy of this mass media outlet.

Violent Video Games do increase aggression, non-violent video games also increase aggression, Adam Sandlers face increases aggression in. everyone.

to hell with the games, Why does everyone believe aggression is a bad thing that should be gotten rid of ?

Well done! The essay is well structured with references and a logical plan. There are a few grammar errors but for someone who doesn’t speak english well, that is fantastic.

I agree on nearly every level with your essay. I have been playing violent videogames since i was 10 and I turned out fine. My parents knew I was playing them but trusted me enough to know violence is bad.

The drug part got to me, i remember when many guys i used to know would play with me but then they got addicted to drugs&alcohol and we stopped chilling together.

Some of the nights they would go out and get high, i preferred staying at home with a few friends playing splitscreen Timesplitters and FIFA. -)

Hi, very nice essay. Is it okay if I use part of your essay to my research on why video games are good for you? I will never plagiarise, I promise.
