What do Sal and Phoebe have in common other than the disappearance of their mothers?

Although they appear to have personalities that are polar opposites they are both struggling to make sense of their lives and the situation they have found themselves in. They are also both very scared of random bad happenings for no particular reason although Sal is aware that before her mother’s disappearance she was not really afraid of anything. Both have feelings if guilt and wonder if they are to blame for their mothers leaving, feeling that if they had acted differently then their mothers would have stayed. Both also are finding the transition between childhood and adulthood confusing and are struggling to make some sense of it.

Do you think Sal’s mother would have returned?

Sal’s mother seemed like she was trying to find something in herself, not trying to escape what she saw in other people. She clearly adores her husband and her daughter and makes this plain in the postcards she sends home. She seems to be trying to find more in herself and it is likely that she would have returned to her family because she does not seem like the kind of person who would hurt those she loves on purpose.

How does the author tell two completely separate stories within one novel?

The author tells Sal’s story by utilizing Sal to tell Phoebe’s story. The central story in the book is Sal’s road trip with her grandparents, following the route her mother took to Idaho and allowing the story of Sal’s family to be narrated. As they travel Sal tells the story of the disappearance of Phoebe’s mother which is simultaneously intertwined with hers, and completely apart from hers too. By telling a story within a story the author uses Sal as the narrator not just for her own story but for Phoebe’s as well.

In Walk Two Moons, Mrs. Partridge, Margaret Cadaver’s mother, leaves messages on Phoebe Winterbottom’s porch. The first of these messages reads, “Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins.” As Salamanca tells Phoebe’s story, she walks in Phoebe’s moccasins, and she learns not only about Phoebe but about herself as well. She declares that “beneath Phoebe’s story was another one. Mine.”

The two primary themes in Walk Two Moons, separation and love, are strongly intertwined. The first theme, separation, reflects the basic developmental task of adolescence: separation from the mother. Creech clarifies this theme for readers with Sal’s memories of her dog, Moody Blue. She remembers how Moody Blue would not let anyone touch its litter of puppies during the first week after their birth. Gradually, the dog allowed its puppies to be touched but would always carefully herd them back. When they were six weeks old, however, Moody Blue pushed them away. Sal thought that Moody Blue was terrible, but her mother explained the dog’s behavior by telling Sal, “They have to become independent. What if something happened to Moody Blue? They wouldn’t know how to survive without her.”

Walk Two Moons examines the related themes of separation and love through the stories of Salamanca, Phoebe, and, to a lesser extent, Ben. Their mothers have all left home, either temporarily or permanently, and, as Salamanca gives voice to her own thoughts and experiences or tells her grandparents the story of Phoebe, readers come to.

This is ultimately a very sad book and loss is the theme that is central to both the plot and each of the characters. Sal has been affected by loss multiple times and really had to go through the loss of her mother twice; once when she left, and once when she was killed which also meant the loss of Sal’s hope that one day she would come back again. The reason for her mother leaving was also loss as it was losing a baby that precipitated her departure.

The loss of her mother meant that Sal had to suffer the loss of her world as she knew it as she was forces to move from the home she loved and in a way she lost a part of herself when that happened.

Phoebe’s mother leaves because she feels she has lost herself in the minutiae of life and by leaving she creates the experience of loss in her family.

Margaret Cadaver experiences loss when her husband is killed by a drink driver and it is this experience that brings her and Sal’s father together as they each understand what the other feels; she is also an enduring reminder of the loss the Hiddle family has experienced as she was the only survivor of the crash that killed Sal’s mother.

Walking A Mile In Someone Else's Shoes

The title of the book comes from one of the sayings that the mystery note writer leaves on Phoebe’s doorstep – never judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins. It is a reminder that until we have been in somebody else’s position we should not criticize them. It is also a Native American mantra that Sal’s father espouses. This theme is evident in the road trip that Sal takes with her grandparents as she literally does walk in her mothers shoes and she starts to realize that her mom had the right to have feelings that are not precipitated by her daughter. She also tries to understand what it must have been like to walk in Margaret’s moccasins and why her father likes spending time with her so much.

Salamanca does not like the feeling of being noticed among college students, but will do this to help her friend Phoebe.

Another example of this theme occurs in Chapter 26 when Phoebe is staying over at Salamanca’s for the night. The girls are lying in bed, and Phoebe begins to cry. Sal does not comfort her, and instead lets Phoebe cry by herself. Sal reflects, “sometimes you just wanted to be alone with the birds of sadness” (169). Salamanca is giving Phoebe space to let her feelings out. Salamanca understands what Phoebe is going through, since she went through it herself.

A third example of this theme occurs in Chapter 41 when Gram has a stroke, and Gramps will not leave her bedside in the hospital. An intern tries to get Gramps to leave the room, since Gram has no idea he’s there. Gramps says, “Sonny, I’ve been by her side for fifty-one years…” (256). Gramps cares for his wife in love and friendship. Even though she is unconscious, Gramps remains a true friend to his wife and stays by her side.

Finally, Sharon Creech shows through this theme how important friendship is to everyone. Whether it’s helping a friend with her mother’s disappearance, giving a friend space when she is sad, or staying by her side while sick, friendship is a part.
